Statement of the New Hampshire Hospital Association
Regarding House Vote to Repeal Certificate of Need;
Steve Ahnen, President
March 14, 2012
CONCORD – Today's vote by the New Hampshire House to repeal the state's certificate of need (CON) law will lead to higher health care costs in New Hampshire if HB 1617 becomes law. Decades worth of research, much of which has been pioneered and led here in New Hampshire by researchers at The Dartmouth Institute, shows that more capacity in the health care system...more hospitals, imaging centers, and specialists, for example...leads to higher utilization and increased costs. What that research also shows is that more care does not always mean better care.
We will continue to work with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle as this bill moves over to the Senate where we will seek to strengthen, not abandon, our current CON structure and process.
