The winning school will receive a $500 prize to support its work promoting healthy eating and active living for students and staff and recognition at the NH Excellence Awards (The "ED"ies) 20th Annual Gala Awards Dinner on June 8, 2013. The HEAL "ED"ies recognizes an outstanding school in New Hampshire that is creating a healthier environment that supports healthy eating and physical activity and is achieving positive results for students and staff.

Applications are due February 15, 2013.

Schools from throughout the state – from kindergarten through 12th grade – are eligible for the HEAL "ED"ies Award. Healthy eating criteria include strong nutritional standards for all foods and beverages sold or provided throughout the school day. Active living criteria include requirements for quality physical education and opportunities for physical activity throughout the week such as a "Safe Routes to School Program."

The first two awards were given to Thorntons Ferry School (2011) and North Charlestown Community School (2012). "These schools were selected not only because they met the HEAL criteria, but they were also successful in engaging students, staff, parents and the entire community in their efforts to provide healthier choices at school", said HEAL NH Director Terry Johnson. "We look forward to our third year of recognizing a model HEAL school".
